A word from the director

Kiss Me, Kate - a true classic of the American Musical Theatre.

In 1949, Kiss Me, Kate, written by the legendary Cole Porter, won Broadway's very first Tony Award for best musical. Playing 1,070 performances, this provocative musical was revolutionary and quite risquee for its time. Brooks Atkinson of the New York Times said it was "a thoroughly enjoyable musical comedy" and the Daily News called it "the sprightliest, handsomest and most tuneful musical imaginable". In 1953, M.G.M. brought the musical to the silver screen. The movie featured Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Ann Miller and dancing discovery Bob Fosse.

Beginning on a bare stage at Baltimore's Ford Theatre, the timeless story revolves around a theatrical troupe that is rehearsing and performing a new musical adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy, The Taming of the Shrew. The duo playing Petrucchio and Kate are also a real life divorced husband and wife who bring their personal frustrations onto the stage. There are surprise plot twists and turns, as well as many fun antics that occur while presenting the new musical.

Kiss Me, Kate is full of the post World War II spirit, optimism and ideals that dominated the late forties. Etobicoke Musical Productions celebrates that enthusiasm with a production that is true to the period.

The greatest legacy of Kiss Me, Kate is Cole Porter's music that features so many classic show tunes including Wunderbar, Too Darn Hot, Another Op'nin', Another Show, Why Can't You Behave, So In Love, and Always True to You In My Fashion.
